"Mind, Body, and World in Psychiatry": Sanneke de Haan in conversation with Joel Krueger

Psychiatry is enormously complex. One of its main difficulties is to articulate the relationship between the wide assortment of factors that may cause or contribute to psychiatric disorders. Such factors range from traumatic experiences to dysfunctional neurotransmitters, existential worries, economic deprivation, social exclusion and genetic bad luck. The relevant factors and how they interact can differ not only between diagnoses but also between individuals with the same diagnosis. How should we understand and navigate such complexity?

In this conversation with Joel Krueger, philosopher of psychiatry Sanneke de Haan draws on insights from “enactivism”, a theory of embodied cognition with close links to phenomenology, to develop a philosophically-based non-reductive account of mind, body, and world in psychiatry that cuts across experiential, physiological, and socio-cultural dimensions.

Sanneke de Haan is a philosopher and postdoctoral researcher within the Department of Culture Studies at Tilburg University, Netherlands. Her research sits at the intersection of philosophy and psychiatry. Her book "Enactive Psychiatry" was published in 2020 by Cambridge University Press. sannekedehaan.com
