"Anishinaabe Ontology and Philosophical Practice": Dolleen Tisawii’ashii Manning & Kathrine Cuccuru

In this event, interdisciplinary artist and scholar Dolleen Tisawii’ashii Manning considers the ways that Anishinaabe knowledge systems resist disciplinary boundaries and canonical academic values. In a wide-ranging philosophical conversation, Manning explains her use of ideas like “Mnidoo-Worlding” (which takes as its starting point the presumption of a life-world populated by human and other-than-human persons), as well as how Anishinaabe ontology relates to contemporary discourse in continental philosophy and critical theory.

Dolleen Tisawii’ashii Manning is an interdisciplinary artist, scholar, and member of Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation. Her research interests include Anishinaabe ontology, studio visual arts, phenomenology, critical theory, Indigenous imaging practices, Mnidoo inter-relationality, epistemological sovereignty, and the debilitating impact of settler colonial logics.

Kathrine Cuccuru is a historian of philosophy, specialising in the early modern philosophical discussion of the sublime in English, and its location with philosophical, intellectual, and political Enlightenment thought. She is also interested in the intersection of contemporary aesthetics and cognitive science, the politics of art and art practices, philosophical methodology, as well as what it means to be a philosopher.
