"The Philosophy of Addiction": Jeanette Kennett in conversation with Zoey Lavallee

Addiction is one of today’s most pressing public health crises. Last year alone, over 100,000 people in the United States died from drug overdoses. The effects of addiction on addicted people, their families, and their communities are complex and often devastating. Addiction is fuelled by structural factors, such as poverty and inaccessible healthcare, and people experiencing addiction commonly face stigma, discrimination and criminalization. It is also the case that many people with addictions do recover, whether this takes the form of abstinence-based recovery or managing continued drug use in a different way. The crisis of addiction raises critical questions for communities, health institutions, clinicians, and policy makers, and calls for urgent action. How can philosophy best contribute to answering these important questions and calls for address?

Join Jeanette Kennett and Zoey Lavallee for a discussion of the philosophy of addiction, with a focus on Jeanette’s important work on the topic. Jeanette and Zoey will discuss questions such as: How do the social and material circumstances within which a person experiences their addiction shape their agency? When addiction becomes entwined with one’s identity and view of oneself, how does this impact self-efficacy? And what are some practical and supportive approaches to navigating addiction-affected relationships?

Jeanette Kennett is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Macquarie University. She is also a member of the Macquarie University Ethics and Agency Research Centre. Her main areas of specialization are moral psychology, applied ethics, and nueroethics.
