What is Kangaroo Care? | Children's Hospital Los Angeles

Kangaroo care - holding your baby skin-to-skin - is one of the most powerful ways to support a newborn’s health and development. At CHLA, our annual Kangaroo-a-Thon encourages and celebrates this vital bonding practice across several critical care units, including the Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit (NICCU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), and Cardiovascular (CV) Acute Care Unit.

Skin-to-skin has numerous benefits for babies, including better growth, shorter hospital stays, and more stable heart rates, body temperatures, and oxygen levels. It can also benefit caregivers by raising their confidence in caring for baby and promoting breast milk supply in new moms.

By expanding the education and hands-on support beyond the NICCU, we’re helping more families connect, regulate, and grow together during their hospital journey. 💙🦘
