Figures show people ‘paid more for less’ at Woolworth supermarkets
Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says inflation came in hotter than expected after Woolworths’ first quarterly sales recorded $13.08 billion.
"First quarter Australian food sales were $13.08 billion; that’s up 6.4 per cent and in a normal year that would be super strong,” Mr Greenwood said
Mr Greenwood said the company’s biggest growth was coming from its Metro convenience stores.
“But its price rises or inflation if you like that contributed to every bit of that sales growth,” he said.
“Woolies says the number of items in shoppers' baskets fell 2.4 per cent during the quarter.
“People paid more but got less, understandably, that leads to unhappy shoppers.”
