Lucienne Tragin sings a high-lying romantic Strauss melody

THE SONGBIRD: Lucienne Tragin was a Belgian coloratura soprano, and a principal soloist at The Monnaie in Brussels from 1929 to 1933. Her roles there included Rosina, Marzelline, Queen of the Night, Olympia, Lakme, and Minka. She made about a dozen aria recordings, and appeared as Resi in a film version of Strauss's operetta "Valse de Vienne" in 1933. I am unable to find any additional details of her biography.

THE MUSIC: "Valse de Vienne" is the French version of an operetta that uses the music of Johann Strauss and his son Johann Strauss II in a pastiche of a biographical story about the competitive relationship between them. It's all very meta. It is best know in its English rendition, "The Great Waltz," which was made into two Hollywood films, first in 1938 (which made Miliza Korjus a world-wide celebrity), then again in 1972 (the last film be theatrically shown in Cinerama). This is Resi's final aria, a high-lying lyric piece.
