Gail Robinson is lovely in a poignant Spanish nightingale ode
THE SONGBIRD: Gail Robinson (1946 - 2008) was raised in Tennessee. She was a Met Opera Auditions finalist in 1966, making her professional debut that same year with Memphis Opera as Lucia. She sang regionally often (Chicago, San Antonio, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Orlando, etc.) and internationally (Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, Geneva); however, she enjoyed a 20-year career at The Met with over 200 performances including Konstanze, Gilda, Lucia, Rosina, Norina, Adina, Juliette, both Sophies, Oscar, Gretel, Pamina, Ilia, Servilia, Sister Blanche, Almirena, Amor, and Echo. After she ended her singing career, she became director of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions for ten years, and taught voice at the University of Kentucky.
THE MUSIC: Enrique Granados (1867 - 1916) composed "La maja y el ruiseñor" (The Maiden and the Nightingale) in 1911 as a piano piece, part of his suite "Goyescas," inspired by the work of the painter Goya. In 1915, he adapted it as a soprano aria to include in his one-act opera, also titled "Goyescas." The primary melody has similarities to the much-recorded popular song "Bésame Mucho."
