September 15 is celebrated as Engineer Day i.e. Abhayanta Day across the country. This day is dedicated to the country's great engineer Bharat Ratna Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (Sir M.V.). He was not only the great engineer of India but also economist and nation builder. He also did notable work in the industrial sector besides building drains, building dams and canals for water supply and drainage of dirty water from natural sources. He not only did extraordinary work in the field of engineering but also on some occasions set an example of patriotism which is exemplary.
Sir Am Visvesvaraya was born on 15 September 1861 in the village of Mudenahalli in Chikkaballapur district, Karnataka. His father's name was Srinivasa Shastri and mother's name was Venkachamma. Sir M. Visvesvaraya did his early education in his village. His father died at the age of 12. Am Visvesvaraya had to go to Bengaluru to complete his further studies, where he took admission in Central College. Am Visvesvaraya topped BA in 1881. Am Visvesvaraya took admission in Science College, Pune for studies in engineering. In 1883, he completed engineering and got the first place in the exam.
Seeing his talent in engineering, the Maharashtra government appointed him as an assistant engineer. While an engineer, he did many great things and was instrumental in the main design of the flood protection system of Hyderabad and the construction of Krishnasagar Dam in Mysore. The present British government had given him the important work of irrigation system. It was he who invented the new block system in which steel doors were made to stop the water of the dam. Today this system of Am Visvesvaraya is being adopted all over the world.
In 1909, he was appointed as the Chief Engineer of the State of Mysore. Amongst the extraordinary work done by him is the construction of Krishnaraja Sagar Dam, Bhadravati Iron and Steel Works, Mysore Sandal Oil and Soap Factory, University of Mysore, Bank of Mysore and many other institutions. He built automatic steel gates to prevent water flow from the dam and developed a block system for irrigation which is considered to be an amazing feat of engineering till now. Am Visvesvaraya was one of the great engineers of the world, not only in India.
In 1905, he was awarded the Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire on behalf of the British Government, in view of his contribution in the field of engineering. In 1955, he was awarded the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna by the Government of India. Am Visvesvaraya did many basic works on poverty, illiteracy, unemployment, disease. Am Visvesvaraya died on 14 April 1962 at the age of 102.
Engineers Day is celebrated on his birthday on 15 September in his honor for his contribution in the field of engineering. Engineers play an amazing role in the development of the country. Therefore, they are entitled to respect. Just as Teachers' Day to honor teachers, Doctor's Day for honoring doctors, there should be a day dedicated to all engineers for thanking and honoring engineers for their contributions.
