Pico Mountain meets Atlantic Ocean -The best of both worlds -Pico Island Azores, Portugal. Episode 4

On Episode 4 we head up to the highland plateau of Pico Island Portugal. We spend most of the day enjoying nature 800 meters above sea level. This area of Pico Island has various trails, lakes, flora and mini volcanoes. This higher area of the island has some similarities to other places such as Scotland, Ireland etc. The overall characteristics of the Azores is a blend of Hawaii, Iceland and New Zealand.

We enjoyed an amazing drive on the way up to the plateau. The hike we did started from one of the many lakes; this one was Lagoa do Capitao(Captains lake).The hike was low intensity but full of dramatic scenery. After our hike we had a peaceful lunch on the side of the mountain overlooking the Atlantic ocean and the neighboring island of Sao Jorge.

On the second part of the episode; Carlos enjoys relaxing by the ocean. He spent some quality alone time in the quaint swimming area of Mare; located in the village of Lajes. This is a natural lava pool formed by the original creation of the island. There are many of these areas throughout Pico; this one is considered as one the oldest and best on the island.

Laura and I finished the episode with an evening walk by the marina; listened to the ocean birds during low tide.
