Massage Tutorial: Posture (rounded shoulders, myofascial release)

Ask your clients, and 10 out of 10 of them will say that they have bad posture. This is partly a societal problem (we do a lot of work while hunched over), but this is also an issue of perception: We're supposed to slouch a little, for goodness' sake. If they have a pronounced kyphotic curve AND they have pain, then it's time to do some work.

As I say in the video, we're not in this so much to fix their fascia. We're here to calm down their nervous system and give them a sense of freedom as they stand up. To do this, introduce some work where the client has their arms in a semi-flexed position (up above their heads). I like to end every back massage like this, as it allows the client to stand up straighter and breathe more easily.

Work on the pecs and the anterior/lateral ribs, using broad palmar pressure. Invite your client to breathe deeply, causing the thoracic region to change shape as you work. This will do some of the massage for you!

I end with some nice cervical traction, focusing on the occipital region.

Let me know what you think, and if you have any techniques that you'd like to share. As always, let me know what you'd like to see in future videos!
