Massage Tutorial: Face and scalp (myofascial release)

Here's a refresher on working with the face and scalp from a myofascial perspective. No oil needed!

The tissue here is thin but strong, consisting of lots of connective tissue and a bit of sheet-like muscle. As you work, think of dragging this sheets of myofascia along, creating traction all the way down the face. Feel for warming and softening of the tissues as you go.

I tend to use broad tools for the face (finger and thumb pads), and I draw the tissue at an oblique angle. Go slowly, letting the minimal oil and thick fascia determine the pace. Spread the frontal region, outline the eyebrows, and create traction in the jaw. Every technique can end up with some scalp or temple massage.

As you work into the scalp, consider transitioning to finger tips. This specific pressure can feel nice, and it won't pull the hair as much. Continue with that 45 degree angle, drawing the fascia superiorly. With each repetition, try to outline different features of the skull's landscape. You can turn the head to one side, supporting with your resting hand, to access the occipital region.
