Kate Smith (1907 - 1986) was a singing star whose career spanned from the mid 1920s through the 1970s. She was a clear soprano with good range. She possessed musical talent plus a friendly, outgoing personality and overcame the handicap of her ample size. Born in Greenville, Virginia, early in her career she was called the Songbird of the South. Smith quit nursing training for singing and performed in vaudeville, worked up to top spots including New York's Palace Theatre, and in the Broadway musical "Honeymoon Lane" in 1926. In 1931, Ted Collins became her manager, an association that lasted 25 years. She began a 15-minute radio show in May, 1931 which was on several nights a week and achieved top popularity. Her famous theme was "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain" and her opening greeting was "Hello Everybody!" In addition to her radio popularity, she played New York theatres, and toured successfully. She performed in movies "The Big Broadcast" (1932), and a starring role in "Hello Everybody!" (1933), introducing "Moon Song." She continued in various radio shows through the 1930s and 1940s. She introduced Irving Berlin's famed song "God Bless America" on November 11, 1938. She retired briefly in 1954 following the death of her manager, Ted Collins, but came back for guest appearance on TV variety shows during the 1950s and 1960s and occasional club appearances into the 1970s.
