Hidden Engineering Inside the White House #america #whitehouse #history #engineering #architecture

The White House looks like one of America’s oldest surviving buildings.
There’s a reason the inside is newer than most people realize.

In this video, we explain how the White House had become structurally dangerous by the late 1940s after decades of remodeling and alteration weakened many of its old wooden beams and interior walls. The White House Historical Association says engineers found the building was in danger of collapse, and the National Park Service says a thorough examination in 1948 revealed its alarming condition.

It’s all about hidden reconstruction. During the Truman renovation, the historic outer walls were preserved, but the interior was gutted, a new basement was excavated, new foundations were laid, and a steel structural frame was erected to carry the loads.

So the White House most people imagine as an untouched old mansion is really a preserved historic shell wrapped around a mid-20th-century structural system. What looks like the same old White House is actually a national landmark saved by hidden modern engineering.
