Why Did Gothic Cathedrals Have Flying Buttresses? #didyouknow #design #architecture #hiddendesign

In this video, we explain how those exterior arches, called flying buttresses, were not just decorative details. They were major structural solutions. A heavy stone vault does not only push downward. It also pushes outward, creating force that can weaken the upper walls if it is not redirected properly.

It’s all about support. Flying buttresses carried that outward thrust away from the tall walls and into large exterior piers, which allowed builders to make cathedrals higher, lighter, and more open. What looks like extra architecture may actually be the reason Gothic cathedrals could hold massive stained glass windows and feel so tall and bright inside.
