Three Gorges Ship Elevator #china #dam #elevator #ship #engineering #didyouknow #didyouknow

Why does the Three Gorges Dam have a giant ship elevator?
There’s a reason for it.

In this video, we explain how the dam originally relied on ship locks, which take much longer to move vessels past the height difference. The ship lift was added so smaller vessels could be raised about 113 meters in a single moving chamber instead of spending hours going through the locks.

It’s all about speed and efficiency. The lift moves the ship, the water, and the entire chamber together, turning a long lock transit into a much faster crossing. China Three Gorges sources say the lift cuts passage time to about 40 minutes, compared with roughly 150 minutes through the ship locks. What looks like an oversized elevator is actually a massive time-saving solution built into the dam itself.
