Trump Signs Executive Order To Reschedule Marijuana From Schedule I To Schedule III

🚨 President Trump signed an executive order instructing the Attorney General to expedite rescheduling marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III.

The order, signed during a ceremony in the Oval Office, would move cannabis from the same classification as heroin and LSD to the same category as Tylenol with codeine and anabolic steroids. Schedule I substances are defined as having "no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse," while Schedule III applies to substances "with a moderate to low potential for physical and psychological dependence."

More than 30,000 licensed healthcare practitioners across 43 US jurisdictions are authorized to recommend medical marijuana for over 6 million registered patients. The reclassification would ease regulatory hurdles and allow the FDA to study medical applications for cannabis. CNN's Senior White House Correspondent Kristen Holmes covered the signing.

The move builds on efforts initiated during the Biden administration, when HHS recommended Schedule III reclassification and the DOJ issued a proposed rule that drew nearly 43,000 public comments. However, 22 Republican senators wrote a letter urging Trump to keep marijuana in Schedule I.
