3. Unfolding and laying of AIDS Memorial Quilt
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Joanie Evans, Co-President, Federation of Gay Games
"This memorial was started when it was, it's like, to have our own AIDS quilt at the Gay Games. So it's sort of developed over the years, so it's not just for people who have passed away through HIV and AIDS, it's for anybody that we've lost, so that it's a way of remembering those that are no longer here, so that we can have their memory continue with us as we are going along. So it's a very poignant moment, to remember those who have gone on before."
5. Various of people kneeling to write names and messages on AIDS quilt
STORYLINE:
A small ceremony was held at the Gay Games Hong Kong on Saturday to highlight AIDS-related deaths before the opening ceremony of the sports and culture event.
Organisers and participants unfolded a a white sheet, which they called an "AIDS quilt", while reading out the names of AIDS victims.
It's a tradition at the Gay Games, says Joanie Evans, Co-President of the Federation of the Gay Games. The eleventh edition of the Gay Games has come to Asia for the first time, taking place in Hong Kong over the coming week.
Some Hong Kong legislators have spoken out against the event, but it is supported by corporate sponsors like Marriot and HSBC, and it is going ahead.
Same-sex marriage is not yet legal in Hong Kong, and the government is going through legal proceedings potentially requiring it to propose new policy on LGBTGQ+ equality.
