San Diego City Council Approves Paid Parking at Balboa Park
San Diego’s City Council just made a historic move — for the first time ever, parking in Balboa Park won’t be free. 🚗💰
The council voted 6–2 to approve fees that start in early 2026, after a long debate and several concessions. Here’s what you need to know:
City of San Diego residents: $8 a day in the main lots, or $5 for short visits under 4 hours
Non-residents (Carlsbad, Escondido, Chula Vista, etc.): $16 in central lots, $10 farther out
Inspiration Point: Everyone gets 3 free hours, then it’s $5 for residents, $10 for non-residents
San Diego High students park free, and the city is planning quarterly and annual passes for frequent users
Supporters say the fees are necessary to keep the city’s budget balanced and to make sure visitors from outside the city pay their share. Opponents argue it will make the park less accessible and hurt attendance at cultural institutions.
What do you think — is charging for Balboa Park parking the right move, or should it stay free for all? Drop your thoughts in the comments ⬇️
