Caro nome (also known as Caro nome che il mio cor ) - soprano aria from the 1st act of the opera Rigoletto by Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi , to which the libretto was written by Francesco Maria Piave . Aria assigned to the role of Gilda, the daughter of the title jester.
Gilda is a young, sixteen-year-old girl raised after the death of her mother in a monastery. Father - princely jester Rigoletto - knows the evil of this world perfectly, that's why he decided to protect his daughter by cutting it off almost from everything. The girl does not even know Rigoletto's name and profession. Apart from the nurse and the Giovanni trustee, she sees people only in the church. There, too, they pay attention to each other with a handsome and, as it seems, humble boy. A romantic feeling is born in it. This boy is in fact a double-life dissident Prince Mantua, a type of Don Juan fascinated by the innocence of Gilda and excited about the possibility of seduction [1] .
Directly before the aria, Gilda visits Rigoletto to make sure she is safe. He has a bad feeling, that evening he was cursed by old Monterone, whose daughter was disgraced by no other than the Prince of Mantua himself. Also, the young ruler came near the apartment of his own hunchbacked jester and Gilda, but he still does not guess which daughter is known to the mysterious girl in the church. He's hiding until Rigoletto comes out. Meeting with Gilda, she assures her that she is a poor student in love with her. When asked about his name, he presents himself as ... Gualtier Maldé [1] .
The Gilda aria follows:
Gilda after parting with beau tenderly whispers his name, the name of it so expensive ( incl. Caro nome ). Aria, due to the scenic age of Gilda, is one of the highest and lightest of those composed by Verdi. According to the composer's instructions, it should be sung sotto voce (almost noiselessly). There is a feeling here, but not a passion, as was the case with other, more mature heroin of the Busseto master (Violetta from the opera Traviata and Leonor from the opera Trubadur ). The introduction to the proper aria is played on the flute, a simple melody similar to the folk one. However, Verdiego's work, Julian Budden, described music to Caro nomeas one of the best examples of the composition of the great Italian for woodwind instruments. In addition, the emphasis in the aria is on the words desirand sospir ( thirst , sigh ). The heroine is accompanied by a gently fiddling violin. They even harmonize with the beating of her heart. From measure 24, we deal with the transformation of the earlier material both in the musical and verbal layers, but the feeling of the young hero is growing stronger and she can not stop thinking about her Gualtier . Aria completes the term of office [2] .
