SpaceX Starship's Heat Shields - Everything You Need To Know!
SpaceX Starship will be using hexagonal ceramic tiles as its heat shields. Starship was earlier going to use actively cooled heat shields where it would incorporate cryogenic methane to keep the surface from melting during atmospheric re-entry.
SpaceX's Starship is a next generation fully reusable rocket, which SpaceX plans to use for its goal of colonizing Mars. In order to be reusable, Starship need to use heat shields that can be use multiple times with little to no refurbishment.
Starship is going to use ceramic tiles for heat shields. They already tested it on CRS 18 mission, Starhopper and also undergone full duration re-entry testing.
When a spacecraft re-enters the atmosphere from orbit, it travels at very high speeds, this leads to formation of a shock waves resulting in very high temperatures. The heat shields are required to protect the spacecraft and crew onboard from the re-entry. There are various types of heat shields, this includes ablative heat shields, thermal soak, passively cooled and actively cooled.
