ALASKA Bush Flying - Cessna 182 at the Kako Retreat Center (9AK2) 2013

Originally posted on my personal channel, I've brought these videos back around to Left Seat Adventures with some new commentary. While we wait for my Sonex to take us on new adventures, it's good to take a look back on where we've been.

I recorded and edited these videos on my 1st gen iPad mini over my first summer volunteering at the Kako Retreat Center near Russian Mission in 2013. The videos were originally set to copyrighted music, instead I brought back the original engine and wind noise. Crank it up!

(The original music was "Nitro" by the Offspring and "Ride with Me" by Decyfer Down if you'd rather hear that.)

The aircraft is a 1958 Cessna 182 straight tail with a Sportsman STOL kit, long prop, bigger tires than stock and manual flaps. What a great combination, a true pilot's airplane, even if it isn't a taildragger.

What a blast, I look forward all year to returning to Western Alaska.

The flying is great, but I always appreciate the time spent with the people more. Lessons learned, stories told, true community experienced.

You can disagree with their message, but you can't argue with the fact that they've had a lasting impact on the surrounding communities for generations. In a state of the US where substance/ physical abuse and suicide are 5X the national average, Kako teaches people how valuable and worthwhile each person's life is. I've heard these stories directly from the people who chose real life instead.
