Juicy Fruit - Mtume - 1983

Keyboardist, James Mtume, had been a prolific songwriter in the late 1970's and 1980's, penning hits for Stephanie Mills, Phyllis Hyman, and Roberta Flack while fronting a band of studio musicians under his name, Mtume. He decided in 1983 to focus additional efforts on the band and wrote a song that was much in the same vein as Marvin Gaye's, Sexual Healing, a song that radio thought was too suggestive to get wide airplay. Juicy Fruit, was the result of Mtume's increased focus and the song exploded on the charts, peaking at #1 on the Billboard chart, week of 6/4/83. It remained on top of the charts for 8 weeks.
