STORYLINE:
Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob on Monday hosted the leaders of nine Mediterranean European Union member states and several high-level guests at a summit in Portoroz.

Leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen were attending the talks to discuss key European and regional challenges.

The group, known as the MED9, were also expected to discuss boosting the bloc’s economic competitiveness and addressing the escalating situation in the Middle East, officials said.

Particular attention will be devoted to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, with participants expected to call for an urgent response to what leaders have described as “intolerable conditions” in the region.

The summit provides a platform for Mediterranean EU countries to coordinate positions ahead of broader European Council meetings and to reinforce cooperation on energy, migration, and economic resilience.

The gathering in Slovenia underscores the country's growing role in regional diplomacy and in shaping the EU’s common stance on pressing international issues.
