STORYLINE:
Cattle ranchers in Argentina on Tuesday reacted positively to the U.S. financial backup to the South American country, expecting the deal could also mean increased U.S. beef imports.

The United States and Argentina signed a $20 billion currency swap agreement Monday aimed at stabilizing Argentina’s financial market less than a week before the country’s midterm elections.

Along with the main announcement Trump also hinted that Washington could begin importing Argentine beef as part of broader efforts to lower meat prices for U.S. consumers.

The move was welcomed by t Argentine exporters as a potential breakthrough in trade relations.

The U.S. president defended the assistance package amid domestic criticism, saying Argentina “is fighting for its life” and deserves support if Milei wins the upcoming vote — a condition Trump has openly tied to the continuation of American aid.

U.S. beef prices have been stubbornly high for a variety of reasons, including drought and reduced imports from Mexico due to a flesh-eating pest in cattle herds there.

Trump promised days earlier to address the issue as part of his efforts to keep inflation in check.

The currency swap deal, backed by Washington, strengthens Argentina’s Central Bank reserves as the Milei administration faces pressure from investors wary of the country’s high debt and persistent currency volatility. Despite the announcement, the peso continued to slide and local bonds fell sharply.

The new swap comes alongside additional U.S. financial support, including a $20 billion credit line from private banks and investment funds announced by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.

The package reflects President Donald Trump’s willingness to assist the South American nation — and his political ally, President Javier Milei — as Argentina struggles to contain inflation and restore investor confidence.
