STORYLINE:
The leaders of nine southern European Union countries arrived in Slovenia on Monday for a gathering of the so-called MED9 group.

Slovenia has taken over the presidency of the MED9, a grouping which includes nine like-minded Mediterranean EU member states; Italy, Spain, France, Greece, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, Portugal and Croatia.

Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob hosted the MED9 leaders and invited high-level guests, including the King of Jordan, Abdullah II, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen and French president Emmanuel Macron.

The summit discussions focussed on economic challenges in the region and the situation in the Middle East, as a tenuous ceasefire continues to hold in Gaza.
