Building My 28 Foot Sailboat for Long Term Cruising and Living Aboard - Project Triton EP4
Journal of refitting a 1963 Pearson Triton sailboat for liveaboard and cruising. This is part 4 of Project Triton.
The Pearson Triton was designed by Carl Alberg at the request for a 28-foot sailboat that sleeps four. It became one of the first fiberglass auxillary sailboats built in the United States. The Triton is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass. The design was inspired by the lines of the traditional Scandinavian Folkboat. It has a spooned raked stem, a raised transom, a keel-mounted rudder controlled by a tiller and a fixed long keel.
The Pearson Triton 28 has made at least two circumnavigations and several other Atlantic and Pacific crossings.

This video focuses on the process of building an outboard motor engine well for a 28-foot sailboat for long-term cruising and living aboard. I start by removing various hardware and cleats from the boat to prepare for the installation. There are advantages of installing an outboard motor well.
Cutting the boat for the motor well begins with marking the centerline and calculating dimensions based on it. I use an angle grinder with a steel cutting disc to make the cutout for the engine well.
Removing hardware and components from the boat, such as exhaust pipes, wiring, and ventilation hoses, proves to be a dirty and challenging task.
I also remove stanchions, repair cracks in the deck, and address issues with screws and winches.
I face challenges with removing the gas tank and considers removing an ice box lid for practicality.
The episode concludes with plans to continue tearing out old components and beginning the rebuilding process in the next video.
Thanks for watching 🙂
