It’s not completely necessary. If you do want to open one, here are French banks that offer accounts suitable for expat residents: BNP Paribas, Banque Populaire, Credit Agricole. You can also consider some international banks based in France such as HSBC, AXA or Barclays. If not, online banks that operate in France can offer cross-border transactions: Revolut, N26, HelloBank.

Remember, it’s not a legal requirement to have a French bank account. But it can help with many day-to-day things, like getting financial help from the government, taking out a mortgage, or getting your salary in case of not using the same currency. Make sure to check all of your options!
