Johnny Cox & Siemy Di - Playing Jazz on Fretless 6-String Bass - Jamming on the Jazz Standard Solar
Siemy and I first met in 2006. We used to go to a lot of jazz jam sessions together back then and play repertoire like this, the jazz standard Solar. A few years later we started doing duo gigs together using live looping with a basic looper pedal.
In this video we're trying to revisit both of those experiences by live looping a jazz standard. I start off by laying down a twelve bar walking bass line, playing the changes to Solar. Then I play the melody over the looped bass line and I improvise for a couple of choruses. Next, Siemy and I trade four bars for another couple of choruses before I play the melody again at the end.
I'm using the Headrush Looperboard for the looping. It's a brilliant looper pedal, I can set the length of the loop before I start, so I don't need to bother clicking the looper on and off to start and stop recording. We're playing in time with a click in our ears, which is why we're both using headphones in the video. The loop is set to record for twelve bars which is the length of one chorus of Solar. Then the pedal plays back the loop continuously until I stop it.
In this video I was recording the sound into Logic Pro X on my Mac via the Headrush Looperboard plugged into an audio interface. This is slightly different from the previous videos that I recorded with Siemy which were recorded by the Looperboard itself. We recorded one other little jam together at this session which you can watch here.
