It came to our attention that no high quality version of this recording, a longtime favorite, was on YouTube. So here it is.

Vaughan Williams originally intended to write an operatic adaptation of "The Scholar Gipsy" based upon Malcolm Arnold's "Thyrsis" poem. He composed the Elegy between 1947-49, and it got its public premiere in 1952.

Wistful and melancholy, it seems to yearn for his youthful days in the company of Holst and Butterworth of bygone days.
