When it comes to fat loss, people think cardio is king and spend hours on the treadmill trying to lose that stubborn weight. But cardio is only one piece of the puzzle.
Cardio doesn’t burn fat directly; it burns calories, which is good because to lose fat you need to be in a calorie deficit, but it doesn’t do it any better than weight training; they did a study comparing steady state cardio at 70% of the test subjects maximum heart rate to resistance training, with one minute rest between sets. Each training session lasted half an hour, and those on the treadmill burned about 20 calories more than the resistance training group.
This is only part of the story. Another study discovered when comparing steady-state cardio and resistance training that resistance training burned more calories after the workout than steady-state cardio through excess post-exercise oxygen consumption. So, resistance training continues to burn more calories long after your workout is done.
