Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate, known as GUR, has destroyed three expensive Russian air defence systems. Two “Nebo” radar systems worth 100 million USD and a “Buk” air defense system belonging to the Russian army and worth 40-50 million USD have been obliterated in the operation launched from October 23 to 24. The operation was carried out in temporarily occupied territories of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, as well as Russian-annexed Crimea Peninsula. Nebo-M is a mobile multiband radar complex designed to detect and track aircraft, missiles and even stealth targets at ranges of up to several hundred kilometres. Russia has deployed Nebo-M units to Ukraine’s occupied territories, especially Crimea and regions close to the front line, to provide early warning of Ukrainian missile and drone attacks. Because of their high cost and limited number, these systems are high-value targets for Ukrainian forces. Ukraine has repeatedly sought to destroy Nebo-M radars to blind Russia’s air-defence network. At the same time, Buk systems have become frequent targets of Ukrainian strikes. Kyiv’s forces have made systematic efforts to destroy Russian air-defence assets, including Buk launchers and radar vehicles, using long-range precision weapons and drones.
