Iraq War Veteran: Lessons from the Occupation of Ireland

Marine Staff Sergeant Sean Horgan's father Michael Horgan served 27 years in the IRA - the Irish Republican Army - before he and his family emigrated (illegally) to the United States and settled in Boston. The IRA fought the British occupation of Northern Ireland using tactics that were similar to those used against the American forces in Iraq. In this video, Horgan talks about having his room searched when he was a boy by the Irish police, who were looking for IRA weapons and materials, and about the conversation he would have liked to have with his father, who died in 1998, about insurgencies. He speculates that his father would have told him that insurgencies work. Horgan also talks about the conversation he did have with his uncle Edward Horgan, a former commandant in the Irish Army, who told him in 2002 as things were ramping up in Iraq that "This isn't going to go well" and "You don't want to be involved in this."
