Why Steiner Wants to Avoid "Quickly Heated" Arguments with Binotto

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner recently stated that they would not abandon Ferrari and look for another engine supplier despite Ferrari’s drop in performance. He has now added to that by talking about what it feels to drive around at the back among other things while speaking to Sport1

Will Steiner Talk To Binotto About Engine Performance?

He began by accepting the role Ferrari has played in the team’s history in F1 but feels that things need to improve

“Without Ferrari we would not have made it into Formula 1, but yes, you put pressure on them to improve. The way we drive now is not nice - to put it mildly. We can't keep up with the midfield and are now driving around in the back, which is definitely not fun”

“Explanations would have to come if the engine doesn't get better next year”

He further reiterated why they won’t be switching engine partners

“It's difficult to find a different engine partner, because our whole team is structured to source parts from Ferrari. In view of the upcoming rule changes, it will be very difficult to make such a switch”

He signed off by elaborating the relationship he has with Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto

“Very peaceful, there is not much talk. When you argue, it gets heated quickly. I've known Mattia Binotto for more than 15 years and we're friends too. Such a situation is very difficult. Putting pressure on him after a race doesn't do any good, except that we're both even more frustrated”

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has described Portimao as a track that “has a lot of height differences and the layout is very cool. It's a bit technical, but in general it's a fast track”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff feels that they aren’t “telling the hybrid story enough. With the complexity and technology in these cars” in F1

He further elaborated that the “50% thermal efficiency, the batteries” they “use and the technology involved are a pretty good example of hybrid technology”

He, however, feels that “the next generation of power units, whenever that is, will use even more sustainable technologies. But then” they “have to look at the costs”

He further added that they shouldn’t “make the same mistake” they “made with these engines, where the focus is on the technology”

They “have to make sure that” they “have something innovative, sustainable, powerful and efficient, and that doesn't cost too much”

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner added to that by saying that “the cost to engine suppliers is enormous, and that's why Formula 1 is not fortunate enough to attract new manufacturers and suppliers”

Former F1 driver David Coulthard has suggested that at Portimao “you have to have guts and attack. Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton and everyone else will enjoy it”

FIA race director Michael Masi has stated that the testing protocols for Covid-19 do not have “a loophole”

He further explained how for Racing Point’s “Lance [Stroll] and everyone else, there are fixed times when they have to be tested before they are allowed into the paddock, followed by another test”

“According to the protocol, Lance should have had himself tested again on Sunday morning” and that “they are required to report any corona to the FIA”

Toto Wolff knows “it sounds absurd but” they “just haven’t had the time to talk” to their driver Lewis Hamilton about his future contract with the team

McLaren’s Carlos Sainz has explained how for them, when they “fight for a top six, the best result is eight points, so you could say that” he is “three races behind” his “direct competitors”

He also feels that gravel traps are what they “all need to do to make the circuits nice and spectacular again”

But teammate Lando Norris, however, pointed out that “more and more tracks are being used by motorbikes which is the reason” they “can’t have gravel as much”
Does F1 need to do a better job at advertising their hybrid technology?
