How to Identify Spiny Leaf Sow Thistle, Sonchus asper

In this video we take a look at the Spiny Leaf Sow Thistle, or Sonchus asper. This is a very common plant often found on the edges of lawns, gardens, roadsides, and waste places. The Spiny Leaf Sow Thistle, like it's name implies, has multiple sharp spines along the margins of the alternating leaves. There can be several variations of leaves on this plant with some having dandelion like lobes and others having no lobes at all. In general the leaves are lance shaped and will alternate going up the stem with the leaves at the top being much smaller than the basal leaves. The plant produces multiple stems at the top that will each produce about 5 flowers. The flowers are small, yellow and Dandelion like and like many other Thistles after flowering will produce a fluff where the seeds can float along the wind. Spiny Sow Thistle can grow from around 2 to 4 feet in height and you will often find multiple growing in one area.
