House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin had a lengthy talk Saturday night about efforts to craft a stimulus package to help the U.S. economy. The pair spoke for a hour and 15 minutes, and have agreed to speak again on Monday. Pelosi’s spokesperson, Drew Hammier said that “while there was some encouraging news on testing, there remains work to do to ensure there is a comprehensive testing plan that includes contact tracing and additional measures to address the virus’ disproportionate impact on communities of color,” He goes on to say that “There remains an array of additional differences as we go provision by provision that must be addressed in a comprehensive manner in the next 48 hours.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that the Senate will vote on Republican proposals for a roughly $500 billion economic recovery bill and additional funding to aid small businesses, starting Tuesday. McConnell, who previously said the Senate would take action during the week of Oct. 19, spelled out schedule details on yesterday in a an interview on Saturday. He goes on to say that a standalone vote on more funds for the Paycheck Protection Program will be held on Tuesday, followed by the main relief bill on Wednesday. The main GOP bill that will be voted on Wednesday will include funding for schools, expanded unemployment benefits and a second round of the Paycheck Protection Program. McConnell said that “Republicans have tried numerous times to secure bipartisan agreement where possible and get aid out the door while these endless talks continue,” but ultimately he blamed Pelosi for the aid impasse. He explained how “next week, Senate Republicans will move to break this logjam” with the votes et for Tuesday and Wednesday. However, the problem is that McConnell has raised his own objection to any deal because he said he wouldn’t put a large bill up for a vote in the senate and that is all Pelosi is willing to pass.

And finally, while many republican senators don’t want to spend a huge amount on the second stimulus package GOP Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said he would vote to pass a "bigger" stimulus package as long as it's "smart." In a pre-recorded interview on Sunday, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said that Congress should go “big and smart” on the next stimulus relief package. Graham said he was aligned with the president "in terms of big but the senator added that while he thinks more money is needed, he does not agree with the policy components of the House proposal because he thinks it wants money. He explained how “the $2.2 trillion coming out of the House has a mandate for ballot harvesting and that has nothing to do with the virus”. On top of this, Graham says that “the $1,200 payment, which he supports, doesn't require a Social Security number to get it in their package, so he thinks that is a lot of the money would go to illegal immigrants.” And finally he goes on to say that “there are some Republicans who don't want to spend anymore, and he thinks we need more money, but we don't need policy provisions like the House has.”
