OKTOBERFEST 2018 (Part 1) Parade Of The Landlords and Breweries! 🇩🇪

Do you know how Munich kickstarts the Oktoberfest? The Parade of the Landlords and Breweries!

The first and most important way to kick off the Oktoberfest celebrations is through the Parade of the Oktoberfest Landlords and Breweries.

Normally around 1000 people take part in the parade, which first started in the year 1887.

The procession starts at around 10.45 am right in the city centre, where firstly the mayor of Munich and his family make their appearance, followed by other important officials. After them the tent proprietors, breweries and carnies follow in their wagons.

You will be stunned by the horse carts decorated with flowers, beer tent waitresses with filled beer mugs, the passionate brass bands from the beer tents and the impressive wagons with garlands and huge wooden barrels.

At the end of the parade, everybody flocks to the Oktoberfest venue called Theresienwiese where traditionally the mayor taps the first Oktoberfest-beer-barrel in the Schottenhamel Tent at noon. This marks the start of the festivities!

Quick fun fact: Did you know that Theresienwiese (meaning “Theresa’s Meadows”) was named in honour of the Crown Princess? Her name was Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen who married King Ludwig the 1st. After their marriage, the citizens of Munich were invited to attend the festivities held on the fields in this exact area right in front of the city gates to celebrate the royal event.
