Imagine this 🌍 — a biodiversity-rich country like India, mapped by satellites and studied for decades… yet a new snake species remained hidden for 15 years.

That surprise comes from the forested hills of Mizoram, part of the Eastern Himalaya–Indo-Burma biodiversity hotspot 🌿. Scientists have officially identified Calamaria mizoramensis, a non-venomous reed snake that was actually collected back in 2008 — but was mistaken for a common Southeast Asian species.

So what changed? 🔬
The real breakthrough came with DNA technology combined with detailed morphological analysis. Genetic testing revealed over 15% genetic divergence, a clear biological signal that this wasn’t just a variant — it was an entirely new species.

Geography explains the mystery 🗺️.
This snake inhabits moist forested hills at elevations of 670–1295 metres, lives a semi-fossorial life beneath soil and leaf litter, and is mostly nocturnal. Even more surprising — sightings occurred near Mizoram University campus, proving how easily life can remain unseen.

Why does Northeast India keep delivering such discoveries?
Because of its rugged terrain, dense forests, low human disturbance, and a still under-explored ecological landscape 🌏. Globally, the Calamaria genus already has 69 known species, yet nature continues to add new chapters here.
