My first Sidewalk Cafe Open Mic, 2002 - These New Pants

So this is a bit embarrassing but WHATEVER. This is not the first open mic I played (that video is TOO embarrassing to put up), but the third. But it's the first time at the Sidewalk Cafe open mic which would be a regular thing for me for the next few years. I performed my song These New Pants, still one of my favorites.

You will see me stalling and adjusting the mic stand out of intense nervousness and not knowing what my hands were doing. I can't stress enough how absolutely terrified I was, sick to my stomach, shaking with fear. I am aware it is hard to watch before I start playing the song (and perhaps after.) Back then I didn't play guitar with a pick because I didn't understand how you hold it.

As you can see, this all went pretty well, with the supportive crowd singing along and Lach, the guy who founded and ran the open mic, being gentle and kind to me during such an intense moment. He would later tell me how much he loves my songwriting and that was a wonderful thing to hear.

Holding the camera was my friend Dave, and sitting with him was our friend Keith.
