Jack Daniel’s Distillery in 20 Seconds
You don’t know Jack.
At least not like he’s portrayed in the media. Jack Daniel’s whiskey is the number one selling whiskey in the United States with over 14.6 million cases sold worldwide last year. But how did it all start?
Born in 1850, Jasper Newton “Jack” Daniel was the youngest of 10 children. He was raised by his father and step-mother. After Jack’s father died during the Civil War, he ran away and was taken in by a preacher and distillery owner Dan Call. Under the tutelage of Call and Uncle Nearest Green, a skilled slave distiller, young Jack honed his craft. Nearest was freed after emancipation and became the first African American master distiller in the U.S. as well as the first master distiller of Jack Daniel’s.
In the 1875, Call sold his distillery to Jack for $25, marking the genesis of the Jack Daniel’s Distillery. Jack, along with his nephews, the Motlow brothers, propelled the brand to new heights.
The “Old No. 7” label originated from Daniel’s initial government-assigned distillery number. Despite a mandated change to Number 16 in district 5 following a district reconfiguration, the original “Old No. 7” branding endured, maintaining the distillery’s established legacy.
In 1906, Jack Daniel kicked his safe in a fit of rage over not being able to open it and broke his toe. That injury would linger with him for years to come and he eventually died of blood poisoning in 1911.
In 1956, the Motlow family sold the distillery for $20 million to Brown-Forman. Today, it’s an iconic brand valued at over $7.71 billion.
The current JD Master Distiller Chris Fletcher got his start as a part-time tour guide with the distillery. He eventually made his way into the Research & Development wing of Brown-Forman, then worked on other brands before coming to Jack Daniel’s as the Assistant Master Distiller and then eventually Master Distiller. Chris stepped into the role gracefully following in his grandfather former Master Distiller Frank “Frog” Bobo.
Whether you love it or hate it, there’s a rich history behind this brand and a reason why it’s number one. Where do you stand? Let me know in the comments!
