What’s the deal with Mizunara Oak in Whisky?

🥃 Happy World Whisky Day! 🥃

I’m covering Mizunara oak on this special day. Check out and share my video for the education and read on for the review of Hatozaki’s Small Batch.

This whisky is 92 proof (46% ABV) and has NAS but says “up to 12 years” in a combination of bourbon, sherry, and mizunara casks. It presents itself with a delicate, pale yellow hue and when swirled in the glass, it forms elegant, slender legs.

Upon nosing, vibrant notes of zesty lemon take the forefront, accompanied by a hint of stone fruit. Oak undertones make an appearance but the fruit elements shine.

The initial impression on the palate is that of a grainy, fruit-forward whisky with a slightly metallic note. Allowing it a moment to settle and giving it a gentle swirl reveals a multitude of intriguing subtleties. The fruit notes remain prominent, but they intertwine with a touch of lime and pepper spice and a gentle savory richness derived from the cask finishes.

Although I’m not afraid of a whiskey that is light in color, I wish I knew more about the age of these cask finishes blended together.

Overall, this whisky stands out and has a grainy character with an enchanting floral aspect and a touch of sweetness, likely attributed to the cask finishes.
