5 Australian Whisky Facts
This Whisky Comes From A Land Down Under
Whisky comes from all over the world, ranging from huge commercial factories to small distilleries on remote islands. Some of my favorite whiskies come from Australia so I want to share a little bit about what makes them special.
Fact 1: Australia is home to over 333 distilleries with 50+ of them producing whisky. Starward is the #1 Australian Whisky sold in the US! @starwardwhiskyUS
Fact 2: The first legal Australian distillery was opened in Hobart in 1822, followed by 15 more throughout Tasmania.
Fact 3: In 1838, a ban put a halt to the Tasmania distilling scene. The 1901 Distillation Act introduced strict regulations that eliminated most distilleries, hindered innovation, and diminished the quality and reputation of Australian whisky for decades, both domestically and internationally.
Fact 4: Australian distilleries now enjoy the freedom of just 3 key guidelines to make and sell whisky: it must be made with cereal grains, bottled at a minimum of 37% ABV, and matured for 2+ years. This gives Australian distillers some of the most creative freedom in the world.
Fact 5: Starward entered the US in 2018 with its flagship single malt: Nova. Nova is aged for three “Melbourne” years in wet red wine barrels sourced from the famous Barossa Valley. Nova has won back-to-back Double Gold medals in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2023 and 2022 where the distillery was named Most Awarded Distillery of the Year. Retailing around $55, it’s an outstanding whisky for those wanting to enjoy something new & exciting with their friends.
