DIY: BMW Hydraulic Lifter Bleeding
Video tutorial on how to bleed the hydraulic lifters on a BMW engine. This does apply to various types of engine, not all BMW are equipped with hydraulic lifters, this is something you will have to research about your engine model. The engine used in this video is also found on BMW E31 and E38 models such as the 840ci, 840csi, and 735i, 735il, 740i, and 740il.This particular tutorial was a 1997 BMW 540i equipped with an M62 4.4L V8.

Tools/Supplies Needed:
-none
Procedure:
-ensure that the correct oil type if being used in your vehicle
-when the engine is cold and not running, ensure that there is the correct amount of oil in the engine
-allow engine to come up to full operating temperature (DO NOT do this procedure when the engine is cold or not up to operating temperature)
-rev the engine up and hold at 3000rpm for three minutes
-once the three minutes are up, let the vehicle idle back down and idle for about 30 seconds
-go outside and listen while the engine is running if the tapping noise has disappeared
-if the tapping continues, continue process over again
-this process can be done up to 10 times
-if the noise does not disappear, it may be an issue relating to something else in the engine
