Take Care of your Hands - Its the Most Valuable Tool We Own
In this particular video I will be talking about proper care of your hands. This is a commonly overlooked area for those of us working with our hands and it’s the most valuable tool we own. Once you damage your hands, it’s either a long road to recovery or it’s something you can’t get back to normal. #handcare #mechanic #safety

Wearing gloves is a great way to protect your hands. While there might be a bit of a ridiculous stereotype thrown at those who wear gloves, you’re thinking of your own best interest. Typically you’ll see me wearing nitrile gloves, these not only protect my hands from any harsh chemicals but I can also easily remove the gloves to expose my clean hands to operate my camera. So in a way they’re helping protect my camera as well. Fabric gloves are another option, while they’re not as great of protection from harsh chemicals, they do provide a better barrier from cuts or bruises. When your hands are exposed to various chemicals such as brake cleaner, other forms of solvents, paint, etc some of these can cause cancer or even other skin conditions such as eczema. As for cuts, this can be anything minor to more severe.
The fabric gloves depending on the style can provide some impact resistance to avoid bruising. One I am guilty of and is a habit I’m trying to stop is using my hand as a hammer. You may have seen me do this on some of my videos, using the palm of my hand to hit a wrench or ratchet and that’s when I typically recommend using a dead blow hammer instead. Exposing your hand to this type of shock can damage blood vessels and an artery. Long-term effects will reduce the amount of blood flow in your hands leading to more problems.
I do find doing some basic stretches with my fingers does help keep them nimble, especially if they’re getting a little stiff from the colder weather. As for stretches, it’s best to look at some common practices online as I’m not a doctor and different techniques work differently for each person.
It maybe hard to see on the video, but my one knuckle is badly cracked. It’s gotten to the point where it randomly starts bleeding.
I will share my remedy for dry skin which seems to work great for me. Dealing with chemicals over the years, cleaning solutions have seemed to take the greatest toll on my hands and it’s taken a while for them to heal. Every night I’ll apply some moisturizing hand cream, it works fine for a very mild form of skin dryness. Increasing the application during the day can help too, but by far my favorite option before bed is applying more where it no longer soaks into my skin, then wearing nitrile gloves.
The next morning, once those gloves are removed here is how many hands look. The biggest difference I’ve noticed right away is the skin around my knuckles being tightened up.
This will soak into your hands overnight without getting your bedsheets messy and when you wake up in the morning, you’ll see a big difference in your hands. If my hands gets bad, I’ll do this for a couple of nights in a row and it’s a huge help. As for hand creams, again those may work differently based on our skin types and I won’t make recommendations for that either.
If you have any tips for protecting one’s hands, please be sure to share them.
