How to Bleed the Power Steering and Check the Level in a BMW E23 7 Series

How to bleed the power steering system and check the fluid level in a BMW E23 7 Series, however this procedure may also apply to the E24 6 series, E28 5 series, and possibly other BMW models as well. There is a specific procedure for checking the fluid level which you’ll see in a moment. #BMWe23 #BMWm30 #BMW7series

Procedure:
Add the fluid to the reservoir with the engine off. The fluid should be close to the bottom of the screen but not over as this may result in removing fluid after. Fluid types will vary depending on your vehicle, there are a couple of different versions. For my car, it used Dextron, here I am using a synthetic version. Leave the screen in place when adding fluid, this will catch any chance of debris falling into the reservoir.

Turn the key on to disable the steering lock, then turn the wheels right to left, full lock each way two to three times for each side. If there is air in the system, you’ll notice the fluid level dropping.

Add more fluid, again make sure it’s even with the base of the screen.

Turn the wheels left to right again, full lock if needed.

Just to turn the engine without starting, you can pull the fuel pump fuse. This will allow the pump to rotate, pushing some air out of the system.

Then add more fluid as needed.

Now starting the engine, the fluid level will most likely drop as the pump increases pressure. Turn the steering from left to right, full lock each way at least four times, and add more fluid as needed. Do this until the fluid level no longer drops.

Next is operating the brake pedal, pump the pedal multiple times and as you can see there is where the air is being pushed out of the system as I replaced the hydraulic brake booster reservoir. You’ll notice the fluid level increases in the reservoir which is normal, just make sure it doesn’t spill out over the top. Stop pumping the pedal, allow the fluid level to drop, then pump the pedal again. You’ll need to do this a few until the fluid is visually solid, so it’s not cavitating which would mean it has a foamy appearance consisting of air bubbles.

Once the air has been bled out of the system, turn the engine off and now is checking the final level. The fluid level must be check when it’s hot, this is when the fluid is fully expanded so you won’t have to worry about it overflowing. If it was cold at the same level, once hot, the fluid expands and it’ll overflow the reservoir.

With the car on level ground, the engine must be off, pump the brake pedal at least 10 times. When done pumping the pedal, the pedal should be hard and the fluid level should rise anymore in the reservoir, so be sure to keep an eye on it so it doesn’t spillover. The fluid level should be 10mm or 3/8” below the top of the reservoir.

You may need to add or remove the fluid. A turkey baster or suction pump can be used to remove access fluid.

When done, the cap can then be reinstalled and tighten the retaining nut by hand. If you do notice fluid leakage around the reservoir, there is a replaceable seal.
