The Tourists were a British 5 piece that made a splash with their cover of “I Only Want to Be With You” that rose to #4 on the UK Singles Chart in 1979. A Year later in 1980, however, while the band was midway through a tour in Bangkok on their way to Australia., The Tourists broke up, and so did the romantic relationship between band members Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart. In a hotel room in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, the city with the motto “City of Good Sports,” Annie & Dave decided to forge ahead and form a duo. They decided to call themselves Eurythmics, after a developmental technique for teaching music that Annie experienced as a child.

Eurythmics were signed by RCA, but their first album, In the Garden, released in ’81, bombed… Dave & Stewart were broke, and had to haul their broken-down gear in an old Volvo for a series of poorly attended shows they booked entirely on their own.

At one gig, Eurythmics played in front of only 4 people, and afterward got caught in a snowstorm and had to pull the car off the road. It was one of many storms that made the winter of ’81 one of the most punishing in British history.

It was 6 a.m. and Annie, still reeling from the disbanding of The Tourists, sat in the car sobbing… The future of Eurythmics was in serious jeopardy…. At that moment, Dave realized he needed to do something….. He had to find a way to get new equipment to develop a new sound for the duo, Dave went to a local bank and met with the branch manager, asking for a loan for him & Annie to get some new equipment.
