Rees Dart Track, South Island - New Zealand

This 6 day tramp in January 2018 over Anniversary Weekend enjoyed stunning weather. Temperatures in the low 30's and clear views on all but the first afternoon gave enjoyable tramping conditions (if not a bit too hot and humid at times). We took 6 days and planned 2 side days trips, but a damaged track and washed out bridge put pay to the Whitbourn Valley excursion. The long day up to Cascade Saddle must however rank as the most spectacular days tramping in NZ. The Dart Glacier, the views from the saddle and the wild stunning scenery of the upper Dart Valley add up to something very special. During this trip our group ranked the best tramps in NZ (see the closing credits) and while the group felt this was number 2, for me it is the best of all. Dart Hut is a fabulous location to spend a few nights, particularly as free of sandflies as it was on our trip. Plenty of bathing holes in the river near to the hut also gave relief from those high temperatures.
