THE MILFORD TRACK - Hugh & Dad's Excellent Adventure (January 2020)

Here is our trip along the Milford Track in New Zealand, always written up as one of or THE most beautiful walk in the world. We would highly recommend doing the walk to anyone! General fitness will be fine but the more fit you are the easier the pace will be for you. Out of the 50 people in our group the spread of "trampers" would have been up to 5km from the front of the group to the back at times with hikers of all different levels of experience and fitness. Also out of the 50 people there was 13 kids/teenagers under the age of 18, the youngest being 12 (Hugh!).

The walk consisted of 3 days walking with one day either side to travel to the start and home from the finish (4.5 days total). The trek was guided via Ultimate Hikes in Queenstown (www.ultimatehikes.co.nz). We would highly recommend booking via them, extremely well organised and the guides were helpful, fun, knowledgable and clearly all loved their jobs.

The accommodation and food/food service was great and was important to me given that it was Hugh's first trek of this kind & that he felt as comfortable as possible when not on the track walking as I really wasn't sure how he would go on top of highly unpredictable weather conditions.

Day 1: Bus to Te Anau then boat from Te Anau Downs to Glade Wharf folled by a 1.6km (1 mile) walk to Glade House
Day 2: 16km (10 miles) Glade House to Pompolona Lodge
Day 3: 15km (9.4 miles) Pompolona Lodge to Quintin Lodge
Day 4: 21km (13 miles) Quintin Lodge to Sandfly Point then boat (10 mins) across to Milford Sound
Day 5: Milford Sound boat cruise then 4.5 hour bus trip back to Queenstown.

****Sandflys are real! They are a complete pain in the a** when you encounter them. The bites can get extremely itchy and if you don't take the right cream/spray can still be itchy 4-5 days later.****
