Pong (1972 Atari Arcade Game) - Gameplay (50th Anniversary)

On this day 50 years ago, Atari released Pong, the first commercially successful game and widely considered one of the most important games ever released, as it was the first to prove the financial viability of video games and therefore establish the video game industry, having also popularized the first home video game console, Magnavox Odyssey, also released in 1972.

Atari released several Pong sequels that built on the gameplay of the original, adding new features. During the 1975 Christmas season, Atari released a home version of Pong exclusively at Sears retail stores. The home version was also a commercial success and led to several clones. The game was remade on multiple home and handheld platforms after its release. Pong is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., due to its huge cultural impact.
