Jim Horan and his Net Zero Energy home in Arvada's GEOS Community

The GEOS community, being developed by Norbert Kleibl, is the only new community we know of that is designed to be "net zero." With no natural gas service, all its homes are powered by the sun, with high efficiency ground source or air source heat pumps and conditioning energy recovery ventilators (CERVs) providing all the heating and cooling using that solar-generated electricity. This house has less than 6 kW of solar PV, yet that is enough to provide all the home's energy needs because of its tight construction. For example, instead of blown in cellulose insulation in the attic and walls, it has closed cell foam that was sprayed onto the interior of all those exterior surfaces. Alpen triple-pane windows help too, and the passive solar design includes ledges over the south facing windows which shade them during hot summer months while letting the full sun through those windows in the winter. Water is also conserved, as you'll see in this video, maximizing the utility of rain water to irrigate the small grassy area and fruit trees outside the house. Enjoy this tour -- and ask yourself why more builders aren't doing what Norbert is doing when it comes to building new homes with a minimal carbon footprint.
