Making Music Up in Lights - Scarborough Fair by The Phoenix Choir of Wales

The Making Music Up in Lights project aims to showcase the brilliant variety of music our 3,800+ member groups have continued making across the UK, even in the face of a pandemic. Formed of 220,000 hobby musicians, our groups perform diverse genres and styles of music at all levels of experience – each music maker’s unique background contributes to the rich tapestry of the leisure-time music sector.

Our next spotlight falls on The Phoenix Choir of Wales from Swansea, who delight with their rendition of traditional English ballad 'Scarborough Fair'!

About The Phoenix Choir of Wales:
We are a modern Male Voice Choir based in Swansea, South Wales who love to sing popular music alongside the more traditional Male Voice Choir repertoire. As well as singing the kind of songs you would expect such as Gwahoddiad, Men of Harlech and Myfanwy, you can also hear us singing songs such as Queen's 'Don't Stop Me Now', The Electric Light Orchestra's 'Mr Blue Sky' and 'Africa' by Toto! During the 18 months of the lockdown caused by the Covid pandemic, the choir kept in touch by continuing their weekly rehearsals via Zoom. Not only did we practice songs in our repertoire but also learned some new ones which were recorded and edited into 'virtual performances' by the choir's MD, John Mills. These can now be viewed on the choir's YouTube channel. As we came out of lockdown and started back to in-person rehearsing (complete with social distancing and a thorough risk assessment), we were approached to sing music for a new film written and directed by Kevin Allen (of Twin Town fame) called La Cha Cha. We were privileged to perform the songs at the film's premiere in September prior to its cinema release.
